Child Protection

West Country Agency insists that its teachers follow a strict 'no physical contact policy'.

This policy is very clear, ‘Only a tap on the hand ’, ‘just a hand on the shoulder’ or ‘separating a fight’ might be your version of events, but not shared by pupils or parents.

You must safeguard yourself against any challenging situations by following the school disciplinary procedures. Our 'no physical contact policy' will protect you against any damaging allegations, which may later become seriously misconstrued.

The four recognised types of accusations that teachers may experience are:
Physical, Sexual, Verbal and Psychological.

If you are ever accused of any of the above, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please follow the procedure below:
1. Make sure you advise a senior member of staff immediately
2. Log the incident and the accusation in the staff record book
3. Document in as much detail as possible, the incident, time, date, witnesses and the name of the pupil
4. Keep a copy of the document for yourself, and send one to West Country Educational Agency
5. Report the incident to the school and also inform West Country as soon as possible

As a supply teacher it is important that you try to follow these guidelines as closely as possible. If you do not have witnesses, your explanation will have much more credence if it is promply supported by accurate documentation, and a senior member of staff receives a report of the incident. West Country Agency will also be in a stronger position to support you if you have clear and accurate proof of your version of events.

It is important that the above policy is followed in order to ensure that your teaching career is not put in jeopardy.
