Supply Teaching for ECT's
What Can Supply Teaching offer to you as you complete your Initial Teacher Training (ITT).
- Upon completing your ITT you will receive Qualified Teacher Status(QTS). QTS may take a couple of months to be processed following the end of your course. There is no reason why you cannot spend this time in the classroom – honing your skills as an educator. Teachers with QTS pending can work in schools as teacher instructors and Higher level teaching assistants. Supply Teaching will enable you to start earning as soon as you have finished your training. Contact us to find out how we can help you with this.
- Supply Teaching allows you to experience a variety of schools, selecting schools to apply to for your induction can be daunting. Schools, especially primary schools, vary greatly, they can mix year groups and key stages, be single or multi form entry, embedded in a rural community or part of large academy trusts – they are not 'one size fits all' environments. Starting your induction is a huge commitment and working in various schools as a supply teacher can help you determine where you see yourself as you complete your induction. “I wanted to write to thank you all for 'launching' me into my teaching career! ... The staff in the office are always so helpful and reassuring. The experience of supply teaching has been an invaluable one where I could see how several different schools operated and tried my hand at teaching different classes. All of this lead to me getting my first teaching post and was a vital step for me." Carolyn ECT moving to a permanent position
- If you have secured a position, June to September can be a long time to be out of the classroom – supply teaching will allow you to continue to grow as an educator.
- Whilst supply teaching, you can try new age groups, experience different schools and explore different teaching techniques and learning schemes.
- Supply teaching can assist you in finding a permanent position – if you have visited a school on supply you will be aware of the rhythm of the school, familiar with the ethos and recognize a face or two at interview – all of these are a big advantage at a daunting time. The school will also recognize you and be aware of how you perform in a day to day environment outside of the pressure of interview – surely an advantage. When joining our supply agency you will be asked to provide a CV which will provide some of our safeguarding checks but will also be shared with schools if you are put forward for longer term roles. There are tips on writing a CV and Personal Statement here.
- As a supply teacher your confidence will grow – you will have the opportunity to teach from the lesson plans of more experienced teachers as well as using your own resources – as our supply teachers say in their Top Tips – Become a Magpie! "Fresh out of university, I was apprehensive about heading into the world of work, but through the support provided and the constant stream of both long term and short term assignments, I am now leaving with bounds of experience and confidence, ready to start my ECT years in a full time position." Chloe ECT - Moving to permanent position
- A qualified teacher who gained QTS and who has not completed an induction period, can undertake short-term supply work of less than one term in a relevant school for a maximum period of 5 years from the point of award of QTS. This a fixed time limit with no discretion to extend. Short-term supply placements of less than one term, or equivalent, cannot count towards induction, as such posts will not provide an ECT with the breadth of experience, support, and assessment necessary to enable them to demonstrate that their performance against the Teachers’ Standards is satisfactory.
